The transient abstraction of light on sea, stone and fields, the wonder of creation, the inner response to fractaled memories of place and experiences, the accumulation of layers and layers of paint over time, all these are part of John Kingerlee’s work now on show at the Catherine Hammond Gallery in Glengarriff, West Cork.

The Whole Planet is a Garden is the first major exhibition in Ireland of this important artists recent work since the completion of a three-year US museum tour of his earlier work.

Featuring over two dozen new paintings, the exhibition opens Saturday, June 18th and runs until July 13th. John Kingerlee was born in Birmingham, England in 1936.  In 1982 he moved to an isolated farmhouse on the Beara Peninsula in West Cork. Kingerlee’s decision to ‘go west’ for the wild scenery of Europe’s most westerly shores saw him following in the footsteps of the great Celtic Revival artists.

He has found this place of rocks, seas and majestic skies where nothing is static, to be a source of continuous spiritual invigoration. A self-taught artist, John works with the manipulation of linear and aerial perspectives.  He wants his art to recreate the experience of being and moving through the landscape. Many of his paintings take years to complete as he builds up numerous layers of almost sculptural paint.

Kingerlee has become one of the most in-demand artists working in Ireland today.  His work is sought after by art collectors internationally and is included in numerous important private and corporate collections around the world. Now in his mid-seventies, he is at the height of his career, and the quality of his work has never been stronger.

The Catherine Hammond Gallery is in the centre of Glengarriff Village on the N71.  It is open 11 to 6 Tuesday to Sunday.
