Michael Canning

Michael Canning’s work examines beauty in nature, temporality, stillness, the ordinary and the extraordinary.  His erie and surreally beautiful modern paintings of plants whose precision paradoxically leaves everything uncertain.  Best known for his studies or “portraits” of native plants, he uses painting techniques influenced by 17th century Dutch landscape artists.

Canning was born in Limerick in 1971 and studied there at the School of Art & Design and and in Greece at Athen’s School of Fine Arts.  He received a Masters Degree in Fine art from NCAD in Dublin.  His work has been shown widely in Ireland, England and Europe.
