“The past is always an invented land” – Orham Pamuk
Frances Ryan explores early childhood memories when she lived in County Sligo. The fallibility of memory ensures that there is invention woven into each piece. Experimenting with collage, oil paint and resin to create layers, similar to layers of time, she creates evocative pieces that achieve a kind of universal key to memory.

Opening reception: Saturday, July 20, 3-5 pm
The exhibition will be opened on Saturday, July 20th by Anna O’Sullivan, Director, Butler Gallery, Kilkenny and Commissioner/Curator, Irish Pavilion, Venice Biennale 2013.
This US based, Irish artist disassembles and reassembles studio materials integral to the making of paintings, thereby revealing the pleasures of making art. A recent Guggenheim prize-winner, her work appropriates the languages of art history, craft, and carpentry and transforms them into fields of light and texture that are provocative and joyful.
A sample of some of the work in the show can be seen here.
