Leonard Sheil: Shorelines

This exhibition of new, multi media work investigates mythical, territorial, and marginal boundaries between solid and fluid, hidden and revealed.

Sheil is a master at the seemingly spontaneous interaction of different materials. He writes: “From the frothy spume on the strand, to dark bogland and forest, to the meandering riverbank, like a knife dissecting the topographical landscape, from the coastline, to terrain and river, this work explores some of these components.

The opening reception is on Saturday, August 11th from 3 to 5 pm. Writer, explorer and film maker Tim Severin will speak.

BERNADETTE KIELY: Real and Apparent part ii

July 20 through August 8

REAL AND APPARENT part ii is an exhibition of new work by Bernadette Kiely and follows on from the sold-out part i, at Taylor Galleries, Dublin, earlier in July. Two distinct exhibitions, both encompass her response to the specific landscape in and around the river Nore that flows outside her home in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny.

“Real and apparent” is a phrase used to describe how light rays are refracted as they travel from air to water and vice versa in the physical world. The real depth (of an object) is different to the apparent depth the observer appears to be looking at. In essence, the observer is looking at something that is not physically at that point in time and space.

From Bernadette Kiely’s engagement with place, and moving between the objective and the abstract, she explores the surface, depth and movement of the water, the effects of fog and mist and the floods which submerge the riverbanks through increasingly unpredictable seasons, in a series of paintings and drawing which appear as testimony to the changing nature of the Irish landscape.

John Minihan: Portraits of the Artists

A major photographic exhibition, featuring over 30 iconic shots by renowned photographer John Minihan, will be on show from June 28 to July 18, 2007.

Minihan (born Dublin 1946 and now a West Cork resident) is one of Ireland’s most celebrated photographers, famous for literary portraits and landscapes. His forthcoming exhibition of black and white portraits will span four decades of his work, dating back to the early 60’s.

Amongst the work on exhibition will be never before published photographs of Samuel Beckett, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, William Burroughs, Chuck Berry, Jimmy Hendrix, the Who, the Clancy Brothers, Cecil Beaton, W.H. Auden, David Hockney, Al Pacino, Keith Richard, Ray Charles, Pierre Cardin, Gloria Swanson, and more recent images of artist John Kingerlee, Seamus Heaney and Louis Le Brocquy.

Peter Murray, Director of the Crawford Art Gallery, Cork, will open the reception on Friday, June 29th from 6-8 pm.
