Tim Goulding: Field Trips

New work by one of West Cork’s most prominent artists, Tim Goulding, is featured in Field Trips, opened June 1, 2007 at the Catherine Hammond Gallery in Glengarriff, Co. Cork. The exhibition runs through Wednesday, June 27.

Featuring new paintings and works on paper, this exhibition explores the abstraction of land patterns, forms and textures on the Beara peninsula. Goulding eschews the mark of the brush but builds tactile and rich work.

Goulding was born in Dublin in 1945 and has lived and worked on the Beara peninsula in West Cork since 1969. He is a member of AOSDANA, the group established by the Irish Arts Council to honour those artists whose work has made an outstanding contribution to the arts in Ireland. He has exhibited extensively, including solo shows in Ireland, England, Portugal and the USA. His work is notable for its multifarious evolutions from a predominately land based inspiration to the current abstract paintings.

Rita Wobbe: New Paintings

An exhibition that captures the sun and vibrancy of summer, Rita Wobbe: New Paintings, opened August 18th, with a reception to meet the artist on Saturday, August 19th..

Ebullient with colour and energy, Rita Wobbe’s abstract paintings explore tropical waters and botanical exuberance. The artist works with thick, richly textured layers of oil, sand, and other mixed media. Her marks are both sculptural and painterly, and she has recently incorporated drawing on top of her paintings, adding to their rich dimensionality.

Rita Wobbe trained as a sculptor at the Munster University of Westphalia in Germany. She immigrated to Ireland in 1988 and continued her studies at the Limerick School of Art and Design. During her Masters of Fine Art program, Wobbe’s tutors included Charles Harper ARHA and Robert Baker. She has had important solo shows at the RHA’s Ashford Gallery, Garter Lane Arts Centre, the Belltable Arts Centre, and Castlebar’s Linenhall. The artist has also exhibited in Holland and Germany.

The exhibition ran until Sunday, September 10th.

Helen O’Leary: The Cost of Things That Matter

An exhibition of paintings that explore how order forms from chaos opened July 29th and runs through August 16, 2006. In her work, O’Leary explores the technical assumptions of what makes a painting and questions whether painting is a process or a product. She is also interested in how form emerges from chaos.

Born in Co. Wexford, O’Leary was educated at the Art Institute of Chicago. She now teaches at Pennsylvania State University and spends part of each year in Co. Leitrim. She has show extensively in New York and Chicago, and at the Kerlin and Hallward galleries in Dublin.
