Siobhán McDonald: Somewhere in the Future

August 11 to August 31, 2017

The work in this show is suffused with the remoteness inherent in the Jules Verne science fiction novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth.  The story involves the belief that there are volcanic tubes going towards the centre of the earth, descending into the Icelandic volcano Snaefellsjokull before eventually coming to the surface again in Italy at the Stromboli volcano.  The story describes the arrival from one world into another and is an analogy for our own arrival into this new epoch where humanity’s presence in the history of the planet can no longer be separated from the planet itself.

This new body of work by Siobhán McDonald explores imagined worlds, unchartered possibilities, fragmented memories and disjointed narratives from the new world in which we have arrived.  A series of oil paintings on canvas and wood are built-up surfaces where the artist applies and scrapes away layers of paint.  The paintings, often exposed and uninhabited, are less about representing real views as about responses to the perception of the unknown.
